Federal Trade Commission Warning: New Social Media Scam

What is it?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning of a new scam that attempts to trick young people on social media into depositing a fake check in exchange for a painting of themselves.

The scam begins with direct messages on social media sites, from the so-called “artist.” They mention liking the victim’s photo and wanting to create a “painting” or “mural” of them, saying they will provide payment for using their image or likeness as inspiration for the painting. The scammer sends a fake check and tells the victim to deposit it and then send money for art supplies. By the time the check is deemed fraudulent, the victim has already sent the “artists” money for supplies and then owes the bank the money they withdrew.

How to prevent being scammed:

The FTC warns social media users to never deposit checks from strangers, especially when they ask are asking you to then send the money back to them. Only deposit checks from people you know and trust.

Another reminder is to keep social media accounts private, giving these scammers less access to you and your accounts. This way, possible scammer will not be able to send you direct messages without your permission.
